Turn Your New Year’s Resolutions Into Reality With a Vision Board
A vision board is a physical or digital collage with pictures, drawings, magazine clippings, quotes, and other visuals representing your goals and how you feel about them. The practice is rooted in visualization and affirmations, techniques that successful people have used to achieve their goals and manifest their dreams.
“I don’t know nobody wealthy don’t have a vision board.” -Steve Harvey
Steve Harvey has talked about the power of vision boards. He believes that most people don’t have the life they want because they don’t ask for it. He claims to have discussed vision boards with his fellow wealthy and successful friends. Some have shown him their vision boards and it’s inspired him to make changes to his.
Steve Harvey is a Christian, so naturally his perspective is Christian. He points to two quotes from the bible that he takes to mean that we all need vision boards:
“You have not because you ask not.”
“Write the vision and make it plain so that he who reads it will run to it. And even though it tarry, wait for it. For surely, it will come at an appointed time.”
Now, if you know anything about me, you know I’m not a Christian, but I do believe vision boards work with a similar mechanism. Steve Harvey and I just have different vocabulary to express the same idea.
Vision boards work because they keep your goals in sight and your energy focused.
When you see your vision board daily, you start to prioritize your goals in small ways. It helps you stay optimistic, reminding you that no matter what happens, you’re working toward something better. This optimism opens you up to recognizing opportunities and staying aligned with your desires.
Physical or Digital?
Both types of vision boards work, so choose what feels right for you.
Physical Vision BoardsPhysical vision boards are the norm. Gather images that represent your goals for 2025 and arrange them on a poster board. Using your hands to cut, glue, and organize the pictures infuses the board with your energy. Just make sure to set the intention to infuse it with your energy. This is as easy as saying this out loud: “I am infusing this poster board with the intention to bring in all the symbols I glue to it to my life in 2025.”
I recommend rubbing your hands together before starting for an energetic boost.
Digital Vision Boards
Digital vision boards are fairly new. You can download a vision board app or arrange your own collage on a graphic design platform like Canva.
Meditate on the finished image to connect yourself to its energy. Set your digital vision board as a phone or desktop background. Or you print it and pin it to a corkboard.
Focus Areas for Your Board
You can make a vision board for a specific goal or theme, or cover several areas of your life. Here are some ideas to inspire you:
Wellness: Self-care routines, better nutrition, working out more, meditating.
Social Life: Solo dates, traveling with friends, more family time, dating, or marriage.
Career: A raise, a new job, improving work stats, or launching a project.
Finances: Manifesting more money, budgeting, saving, or planning how to spend wisely (retirement, vacations, new clothes, or even buying a house).
Travel: Weekend getaways, annual vacations, or exploring nearby cities.
Creative Pursuits: New DIY projects, art classes, or tackling creative goals.
Education: Attending conferences, webinars, finding a mentor, or learning new skills.
Hobbies: Dancing, blogging, photography, axe throwing, or anything you’ve wanted to try.
How to Make a Physical Vision Board
Gather Materials: Collect magazines, printed images, scissors, glue, and a poster board.
Find Images: Search for pictures and words that represent your goals or inspire you. Stock images are fine, even if they have the watermark (you’re not posting these anywhere). But try to find images that are as specific as possible.
Assemble: Arrange the images and glue them down. Don’t worry about creating an aesthetically pleasing art project. It should only be aesthetically pleasing to YOU. It can be organized or it can be messy. Just make sure to not shift your focus away from your goals just to make it pretty.
Display It: Put it somewhere you’ll see it often. This is easy if you live alone. But if you live with others and/or are afraid of the intentional or unintentional evil eye, find a private spot like in the back of your closet. You can also forgo the poster board altogether and organize the images inside a scrapbook. Just make sure not to lose it in a drawer forever.
How to Make a Digital Vision Board
Choose Your Tool: Use a vision board app or Canva.
Find Images Online: Stock photos, Pinterest, or screenshots can all work.
Design Your Collage: Arrange the images into something visually appealing.
Save and Set It: Download your board and use it as your phone or computer wallpaper.
Infuse It with Your Energy
Your energy matters. While creating your board, focus on excitement and hope for the future.
Do not approach the board with fear in your heart. This is particularly true if you’re trying to manifest more money in 2025. If you’re adding an image of a stack of cash while thinking about how bad life will be if you DON’T have enough money next year, you’re pulling on the energy of lack and fear.
As you glue each picture, imagine yourself living in that reality. If you add a picture of a house, see yourself walking through its rooms or arranging furniture. If it’s a stack of cash, list off all the ways you’re going to spend or invest it.
Do not confuse this with toxic positivity. I’m not saying you need to be positive 100% of the time in 2025.
But you do need to exude positivity and hopefulness for the hour or two that you dedicate to putting your vision board together. If this is difficult for you, set a mood. Blast happy music while you work on this project or put on a comfort show (Gilmore Girls does it for me). Light a candle that smells good to you. Make a hot chocolate.
Exert your will onto the universe and your will is to have a positive 2025.
Take Symbolic Action
After you finish your vision board, take a small action aligned with your goals. For example:
If you added weight loss, go for a walk.
If you included a new home, browse Zillow for listings.
If you want to learn a new skill, search for a class on Coursera.
Let It Work Its Magic
Once your board is complete, let it blend into the background of your daily life. You don’t need to obsess over it. Trust that the universe has received your energy and is already aligning things in your favor.
Your only job now is to keep moving forward, one step at a time, toward the life you’re dreaming of.
And that’s it! I recommend you give this a shot, even if you think it’s woo-woo. At the very least, this is a fun art project that will help you narrow down New Year’s Resolutions for 2025.
